Determine the principal stresses and their directions!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Solution<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>An uniaxial stress state exists if only \u03c3<sub>x<\/sub> or \u03c3<sub>y<\/sub> or \u03c3<sub>z<\/sub> is given (an <a href=\"https:\/\/pickedshares.com\/en\/engineering-mechanics-2-exercise-8-stress-in-a-tension-rod-with-dead-load\/\">exercise for the uniaxial stress state is available here<\/a>). A plane stress state can have two principal stresses and one shear stress. The direction for \u03c3<sub>2<\/sub> is \u03c6<sub>0<\/sub> + \u03c0 \/ 2.
