In this exercise, the thermal expansion of a restrained body is considered using Hooke's law.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

An elastic body has been inserted between two rigid walls without clearance. The body is heated evenly by \u0394T.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The temperature difference \u0394T, the Young's modulus of elasticity E, the Poisson's ratio \u03bd and the coefficient of thermal expansion \u03b1 are given. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

We are looking for the stress in the x direction and the strain in the directions \u03b7 and \u03be.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
